Ways to use your zodiac
There are several different branches of astrology. Broadly, we can consider the most popular, western branch of astrology.
In western astrology, we are able to use our signs to predict our future, the compatibility of our relationships, what our biggest flaws are and how our personalities may depend on dates associated with the stars.
According to the type of sign you are, you supposedly have certain characteristics based on the element associated with that sign. If you’re an air sign, you’re likely logical and highly social (or, at least, you aspire to be). If you’re a water sign, you’re probably more on the sentimental side and you can spot nuances in mood that others can’t. If you’re a fire sign, chances are that you’re determined and passionate—easily angered and full of energy. If you’re an Earth sign, you’re realistic when making decisions and you’re loyal to your loved ones.
If you ascribe to astrology and you practice yoga, there are even yoga poses that are the best for each sign (and corresponding element) to practice. Yoga poses for your zodiac sign.
Yoga poses for each sign
Aquarius
If you’re an Aquarius, you’re known for your imagination and determination to complete your goals. You also are known to have weak circulation and weaker ankles. To work on these issues with your body, try the eagle pose. To play to your logical, truthful side, try the half lotus pose. This pose focuses on meditation and control.
Pisces
You are gifted creatively as well as emotionally, because you form strong bonds with loved ones. For a Pisces, your physical weaknesses are in your toes and feet. A pose that might help with this is the tree pose. Or, if you’re looking to open your emotional core, try the fish pose. This pose works to expand your chest and release emotions.
Aries
An Aries is enthusiastic and competitive. For you head-strong signs, it can be beneficial to try poses like the standing forwards pose. These allow better blood flow to your brain. You may also find that warrior II is helpful because it maintains a strong, proud form that fits with your warrior personality.
Taurus
You, dear Taurus, are strong and sensual. Physically, your weakest body part is likely your throat. To remedy this, try the plow pose. If you’re looking to rejuvenate your energy and channel the charging bull, try the cow face pose. This pose helps with centering and opening your body.
Gemini
All Geminis are animated and adaptable. Your arms and shoulders might be your weakest body parts, so try stretching them out with the upward bow pose. You might also benefit from the shoulder opener pose, which aims to both help your shoulders and relieve tension from slouching—Geminis are prone to hunching over laptops or iPhone because they value communication.
Cancer
The Cancer sign is a sign of security and compassion. Your chest and stomach may be weaker than the rest of your body as a Cancer. Try the Chaturanga pose, which opens your chest and activates your stomach. The Cancer is a nurturer, so child’s pose can take your usual stress away and make you feel protected for a change (because usually you’re the one doing the protecting).
Leo
Like the lion, Leos are typically confident with a flair for the dramatic. Take care of your spine, which is your point of weakness. Try the revolved extended side angle pose to stretch and lengthen your spine. To channel your fierce nature, try the lion pose.
Virgo
Your Sunbulat nature is practical and sweet. If you have a weakness, it’s likely the digestive tract, which you can stretch and regulate with poses like the chair twist. The goddess stance can benefit you by appealing to your patient, open nature and stimulating circulation.
Libra
As a Libra, you’re sensitive to the qualms of others and you’re gracious. Watch out for tension in your lower back with poses like the seated forward fold. You’ll also play to your natural aptitude toward balance with poses like the half-moon pose.
Scorpio
Scorpios are stubborn and bold. You may have trouble with your bowels, but you can avoid this with poses like the butterfly pose. The locust pose can help channel the passion and sensual energy that comes with your Scorpio nature.
Sagittarius
You’re probably pretty funny and outgoing if you’re a Sagittarius. A bodily weakness of yours is likely in your hips, so try poses like the runner’s lunge to soothe any tension there. Because the Sagittarius typically needs to work on her ability to focus, the reverse warrior II pose can help to hone this skill.
Capricorn
If you’re a Capricorn, you tend to be more serious and independent. Your knees might bug you occasionally, but the various poses of sun salutations can help you with that. Try the mountain pose to relax and focus inward when you feel the need to obsessively control every aspect in your life, as Capricorns are apt to do.
